Professor David Roger Jones Owen died in Swansea at the age of 77 on Monday January 13th.
Roger Owen was Emeritus Professor in the Civil and Computational Engineering Centre at Swansea University, Wales, UK. He was a well-known international scholar on finite element and discrete element techniques.
He had forged numerous long standing friendships and collaborations across borders and
nationalities, as he had a long tradition for cooperating with many universities and research organizations worldwide. This included an over 35 year association with UCT, through his interaction with the Centre for Research in Computational and Applied Mechanics (CERECAM). Professor Owen has been instrumental in the growth of computational mechanics within South Africa through the launch and maintenance of regular conference series on computational mechanics, nationally through the South African Conference on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (SACAM), and continentally with the African
Conference on Computational Mechanics (AfriComp). Professor Roger Owen was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree (DScEng (honoris causa)) from the University of Cape Town on 13 April 2019.
The international computational mechanics community has lost a great scientist and a great human being. Prof Roger Owen will be missed by the South African computational mechanics community and would like to extend their condolences to his wife, daughters, family and friends.
Prof Owen's PhD student, Prof. Eugenio Oñate, wrote a personal announcement on his passing.
